People are perplexed by the word fibromyalgia and many cannot even pronounce it. The word has Latin and Greek origins and translates as:
fibro = fibrous tissue
myo = muscle
algos = pain
Therefore, fibromyalgia is a term for muscle pain, although technically it also affects the connective tissue (fascia) which surrounds all the tissues and organs in the body. Some people also experience allodynia, a heightened and painful response to pressure.
According to Wikepedia, Fibromyalgia is estimated to affect 2-4% of the population and affects more females than males, and is most commonly diagnosed in individuals between the ages of 20 and 50.
According to the medical community, Fibromyalgia is currently an unexplained syndrome with a controversial diagnosis. According to Wikepdia many members of the medical community consider fibromyalgia a ‘non-disease’ because of a lack of abnormalities on physical examination, the absence of objective diagnostic testing and extensive overlap with other proposed conditions such as chronic fatigue syndome and multiple chemical sensitivity.
However, they also state that 'several brain imaging studies may also show that fibromyalgia might be the result of childhood stress or prolonged or severe stress'. As any client who comes for Mickel Therapy knows, this is very much hitting the nail on the head.
Fibromyalgia, Fibromyalgia Syndrome - FMA or FMS – is a growing problem in our culture. The name is descriptive of the main symptoms involved, namely painful muscles and fibres. Fibromyalgia (FM or FMS) is a chronic syndrome characterized by diffuse or specific muscle, joint, or bone pain, fatigue and a wide range of other symptoms.
Whilst it is sometimes useful to put a name to a condition, the diagnosis merely refers to the painful symptoms and does not give any clue as to the cause. This is what Mickel Therapy is about - getting to the cause and root of the problem so that YOU understand why you have it. This then gives you the knowledge of what to do about it.
Sufferers of Fibromyalgia will be all too aware of the discomfort associated with this condition. The areas of concentrated pain or ‘trigger points’ are well documented in literature on Fibromyalgia. They are representative of areas used by acupuncturists for centuries. These are areas of concentrated muscle fibres and looking through the eyes of acupuncture are energy blocks in the meridians.
Mickel Therapy works on the assumption that Fibromyalgia is caused, (like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and M.E) by the dysfunction of the Hypothalamus gland - this has been dubbed ‘Hypothalamitis’ by Dr Mickel who hopes that the result of his current Randomised Controlled Clinical Trial will show this and make the treatment available to all Fibromyalgia sufferers. Dr Mickel’s book on the subject explains the symptoms of Fibromyalgia in these terms.
Mickel Therapy believes that Fibromyalgia is part of the spectrum of symptoms caused by a dysfunctional Hypothalamus gland. The symptoms involved in Fibromyalgia are the same as in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and M.E. The main difference is that in Fibromyalgia the predominant effect is noticeable in the muscles and connecting tissues. Fortunately Mickel Therapy works equally well in dealing with this subset of the condition ‘Hypothalamitis’.
Mickel Health Initiatives is currently arranging an independent study of their work to validate this claim. At present there is no trial data to back this and it is based only on client testimony.
Medical science is spending much time and resources researching the changes that occur within muscles in Fibromyalgia. However, since these are effects, they give no clue as to the cause of Fibromyalgia.
Because Mickel Therapy understands the nature of the body-mind, and how it uses symptoms of pain to communicate its needs to the head, Mickel Therapy works by interpreting the message behind the symptoms so that you understand exactly why your body is experiencing the pain.
Then, you are given tools to put into practice whenever you experience symptoms, which guides your body back to health. Clients have excellent success putting these techniques into practice.

Please note that Mickel Therapy's hypothesis of 'Hypothalamtis' and success stories are based on recovery experienced by clients who have used the Mickel Therapy techniques. Whilst many client have recovered, as shown by client testimonials, the results have yet to be backed up by medical research. A clinical trial is currently underway, the results of which will be disseminated when the study is complete.
